organic farming

Organic animal husbandry is sometimes subject to stricter husbandry specifications than conventional animal husbandry. Organic farmers must meet certain conditions in order to be able to market their products as organic. The animals often have more space available, the straw bedding and the constant access to roughage serve, among other things, to keep them busy in the barn. As a rule, organic animal husbandry is associated with access to outdoor areas or pastures. However, allowing exercise always goes hand in hand with increased germ and parasite pressure. The protozoa histomonads (Histomonas meleagridis), for example, are the causative agents of blackhead disease in poultry and are introduced into the livestock mainly via vectors, including the nematode (Heterakis gallinarum) or the earthworm. Care should be taken here, especially in systems where exercise is permitted, such as in organic animal husbandry, since the probability of becoming infected through the ingestion of worms is particularly high here. The risk of coming into contact with wild animals and/or their excretions and being infected with diseases is of course also greater here in organic animal husbandry than in pure stable husbandry. In the case of diseases and infections, there are strict restrictions in organic animal husbandry as far as treatment options are concerned, especially with antibiotics. That means prevention is better than cure.

The challenge for organic farmers is to naturally strengthen the animals’ immune systems to make them less susceptible to infections, for example by stabilizing the intestinal flora with natural preparations. This is where phytogenic additives such as essential oils come into play. Essential oils have been used for centuries, with renewed interest in them, particularly in recent years. Due to their unique chemical composition, as well as their antimicrobial, antifungal, antiviral, immune-stimulating, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, they are used in many different areas, of course also in organic animal husbandry.

Our 4Green products are based on purely natural essential oils and can be used in organic production in accordance with Regulation (EU) No. 2018/848 (DE-ÖKO-006). Both DOSTO Oregano and PHYTOsolvan are available for the organic sector.
