Naturally supporting the intestinal health of horses

Intestinal health is crucial for the well-being, performance and a long and vital life of our four-legged friends. The horses are supplied with important nutrients via the intestinal epithelium and protected from harmful substances from the intestine getting into the bloodstream. In addition, energy is generated during the metabolic processes in the intestines, which is passed on to other vital organs such as the stomach, liver and kidneys to ensure undisturbed functionality.

A disturbed intestinal function therefore usually also means a weakening of the organism and the immune system and leads to an increasing susceptibility to further diseases. Flatulence, strong-smelling faeces, fecal water and diarrhea through to acute and severe colic are signs that something is wrong with the gastrointestinal tract. Laminitis can also be the result of a disturbed balance of microorganisms in the intestine, which releases toxins and can enter the bloodstream.

If left untreated, intestinal disorders in horses can become chronic over time, leading to poor appetite, weight loss, a dull, shaggy coat, hoof problems and recurring diarrhea and colic. The causes of stomach and intestinal problems can be varied, but are often due to the feeding. In order to promote a healthy intestinal environment, keep the microorganisms in balance and prevent colic, the daily ration should have a high crude fiber content, easily digestible starch, limited sugar content and proteins that can be digested in the small intestine.

Other factors such as exercise, basic forage quality, feeding frequency and times, as well as stress caused by transport, environmental factors or ranking fights also play a major role in the health of the horse’s intestines and should be optimally adjusted individually.

We also recommend EQUIsolvan® Digest! So you can do something good for your horse in a natural way! Its use is particularly recommended in times of stress, but also as a cure to prevent indigestion and to stabilize and maintain a well-functioning gastrointestinal tract.
